Miss Niusha Nikravesh
MSc BSc (Hons)
Position
Doctoral Researcher
Project Title
Pancreatic islet encapsulation
Project Description
Niusha joined the Tissue Regeneration and Interface Lab in May 2014. Her project aims to develop an alternative treatment for type 1 diabetes, which is an auto immune disorder. Transplantation of islet cells is a promising alternative treatment strategy to insulin administration, provided that the islets could be protected against the host immune system. Therefore, her project is focused on embedding islet cells in polymer matrices, allowing for the creation of a semi-permeable environment around islets, which is capable of immune protection and nutrient as well as oxygen transfer.
Personal Description
Niusha graduated from the Science and Research University (Tehran) in 2011 with a first class honours degree in Chemical Engineering. Following this, she obtained a master of science in the field of Biotechnology in 2013 from the Sharif University of Technology (Tehran). During her master’s degree she completed her thesis in the field of polymeric drug delivery carriers, and her researched was based on evaluating the in vitro release of model protein from microspheres. Aside from academic activity, Niusha enjoys spending her time playing tennis and two musical instruments (Piano, and Barbat).
